Hi guys, now that I have officially had my first week of winter break I wanted to reflect on some of the high and low points of fall term because it was C R A Z Y & share some tips as well. The classes I took: Pharmacology, Community, Clinic lecture, and medically compromised patient (online) and we had clinic on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Competencies for clinic: Perio Re-eval (evaluating a patient's healing after SRP 4-6 weeks later), PSA, IA, LB injections, Arestin, Ultrasonic end product, timed x-rays, tobacco counseling, nutritional counseling, and the big one..MOCK BOARD. The volunteer work we did in our community class was my absolute favorite. We were paired with a group of three and assigned to centers and schools around town to educate populations with special needs for a class called "special smiles". Our class would be held every Friday morning for about two months and at the end, we got to give them certificates and celebrate at their fall festival! Their fall festival was the highlight of my semester because we really built some amazing relationships throughout this program. In this same group of classmates we had to choose a specific population in our community to create our own oral health education program for. Our group chose senior citizens! When we went to implement our first class at a local senior center, no one wanted to listen to us. It was actually kind of funny because they only wanted free samples and to leave. I think for next term we are going to create a few games to entice them to come to our class, learn, and have some fun. My biggest anxiety and stress this semester was my mock board exam. In may we take our clinical boards in Gainesville but to go onto the next term we have to do a "mock" of what we will actually do in the spring. The requirements are a little crazy.. 12 surfaces of qualifying calculus, they have to be on specific surfaces and teeth, and your patient cannot need to be numb. Plus, they have to be mostly in the same quadrant. It took me two months to find this patient, but when I did, he was perfect. I swear I felt like I was searching for a unicorn but your instructors will tell you not to worry and they are right. Even if it was on the last day of clinic, we ALL found someone. My tips for mock board
I build a lot of confidence this semester and completed some really hard patients. We presented our case patient (an interesting case that we had to find in the summer), had a million group projects, and did so much community volunteer work. Luckily, I THINK our last semester will be a little more relaxed and focused on finishing our requirements. I am actually done with my patient requirements to graduate but I still need several radiographs, so their requirements are definitely doable. I have started to schedule less of my own patients and let the clinic schedule more for me. The "clinic patients" that have been coming there for years can occasionally be unreliable but are also the most understanding for how long clinic appointments are. Thanks for reading and I have a pharmacology focused blog coming later this week! -Callie

Happy Shopping, Callie Hi guys! It's official. My first year is done, and there is only eight more months to go. I can't explain how gratifying it feels to be over halfway there to my end goal. I started this journey of being a "non-traditional student" in 2017 and it really has flown by. I wanted to quickly share a few "real life" things I've learned this past year!
Looking forward to the final stretch! Callie |
