Hi guys! A common question that I get in my messages is asking how I find my patients in dental hygiene school and how to manage them. Yes, your clinic will provide SOME for you but i can attest that they are not the most reliable clientele and are more likely to cancel on you the night before. I thought I would share some tips on how I go about finding mine and how to handle/keep track of them.
Tips on managing patients
I hope you find some of these suggestions helpful! -Callie

Hi Guys! This first week back has been a whirlwind of learning new skills and information. Today we gave our VERY FIRST INJECTIONS! If you have been following my posts you know I have been very excited and a little anxious about this day. I wanted to quickly share my first experience as well as share some tips I have been given over time on finding your clinical confidence.
We were paired up today to give a right and left mental block and supraperiostial injections on #’s 8,10 (a total of four). I was the patient first and it was honestly such a great experience to know exactly what your patients are feeling. My partner Crystal did great and made me feel so comfortable! After the four injections we swapped and I did them on her. Although I did not feel as nervous as I thought that I would, my hand would not stop shaking on the first one!!! After that, with each injection I felt more and more confident. At the end I was wondering what I was so nervous about. Our instructors were over our shoulder and with us for each step. It was such an indescribable feeling!! I’m just so proud to be a part of this profession and proud of the hygienists who fought to make this part of the scope of practice in Florida. I also wanted to touch on finding your inner clinic “Beyoncé”. You might be reading this like…. what?! Well, everyone knows that Beyoncé does not second guess herself, she is confident in who she is and what she is doing ALWAYS. Learning new skills and getting out of your comfort zone is scary so I wanted to share some things I use and advice that has been given to me to help reign the nerves in.
Even when you have been a hygienist for many years, there will be situations that shake your confidence. I am positive that even the most experienced hygienists are stumped at one time or another. Each hygienist has had to see their first patient and give their first injection. If you stay focused on improving your skills and relationships with others, you’ll have the self-esteem you need to handle anything that comes your way. Looking forward to a learning filled summer! -Callie Hi friends! Now that I am coming to the end of my second term of dental hygiene school I wanted to share some things my classmates and I can NOT live without in clinic. I will be posting a more detailed video version of this as well. Sometimes little things just make clinic days go SO much smoother!
I would love to know your must haves for surviving clinic! -Callie |
